Reading Notes: Ramayana, Part D

 Reading Notes: Ramayana, Part D

This is the last of my four blog posts reading Tiny Tales from the Ramayana. I read stories 151-200, and like the last three posts I have selected the three that stood out to me most and I will be summarizing them here. The first story I selected is "Rama Duels with Ravana's Son". It is about how Ravana's son, Virabahu, was devoted to Vishnu. He saw Rama in battle and realized Rama was Vishnu on Earth, Virabahu (Ravana's son) bowed down before Rama and told him to kill him with his sword and send him to heaven. Rama says that he cannot kill someone who shows devotion. In response, Virabahu says that he will make him kill him. They fought violently until Rama's sword cut of Virabahu's head and he ascended to heaven. Then second story I selected is "Rama Duels with Ravana". The god Indra sent his chariot to Rama. The charioteer gave Rama the Bramastra. Rama says that death awaits Ravana! Ravana rode into battle. Rama repeatedly sliced off one of Ravana's heads but a new head would appear every time he did so. The charioteer, Matali, tells Rama to aim for Ravana's navel, so Rama did just as Matali said. This shattered the pot of immortality that Ravana had. Ravana fell dead! The last story I selected is "Gossip Spreads". Rama was laughing and joking with his childhood friends. He asks them what the talk of the town is these days. They respond that the two is still talking about Rama's victory over Ravana. This answer isn't enough for Rama, he asks they to tell him more, including the bad. One of his friends says that some were complaining that Rama didn't allow Sita to come back into his house and are wondering if they must do the same for their wives. This conversation bothered Rama. He dismissed his friends and summoned Lakshmana.
