Week 9 Story: Rick Confronts the Gold Digger

 Rick Confronts the Gold Digger

After Rick took notice that Kendall repeatedly went downstairs to grab the keys to one of his Ferraris and his wallet to go out and purchase thousands of dollars of merchandise whilst he slept, he knew he could no longer be silent. He promised her that he would never question her actions, and he has remained true to his word. She had done this for the first seven days of their marriage and had blown nearly one hundred thousand dollars in the process. Meanwhile, Rick had said nothing even though he was well aware of what was happening.

On the eighth night of Rick and Kendall's marriage, they both went to bed just as they had the first seven days of their marriage. This time, Rick had a bit of caffeinated coffee before he made his way to bed so he could fool Kendall. As he lay in bed he kissed his wife and proceeded to pretend to fall asleep. About an hour later, Kendall sat up and tip toed her way out of the bedroom to head downstairs. Just as she had the previous seven days, she grabbed the keys to one of Rick's Ferraris as well as his wallet and made her way to the mall that was open 24/7.

As Kendall drove away, Rick got dressed and made his way downstairs. He grabbed the keys to one of his other Ferraris. Since Kendall took his wallet, he illegally drove his way to the same mall. Once he saw where Kendall had parked his Ferrari, he knew that she was in the Gucci store.

As Rick walked in to the store, he saw that she was at the register buying ten items. Rick yelled "Kendall STOP, you are spending my money without my permission"! Kendall slowly and scarily turned around to give Rick an evil stare. She proceeded to say "I thought you would never question my actions if I got married to you". Rick quickly thought about what he should do next and decided to walk up to Kendall, grab her hand, and take back the forty thousand dollar ring that was around her left ring finger. Now he could finally question her actions.

Author's Note: This story is a continuation to my Week 6 Story "Gold Digger" which was a loose retelling of "King Shantanu Gets Married" from Tiny Tales from the Mahabharata. This week's story "Rick Confronts the Gold Digger" is a retelling of "King Shantanu Confronts the Queen". In the original, King Shantanu's queen drowned each of their first seven children. As King Shantanu promised, he said nothing. Once she gave birth to their eighth child, King Shantanu confronted her about it. She replied that the child would live but that she must leave. She had been sent to bear his children and kill them as soon as they were born. Their children were the gods of the eight elements and were cursed to be born as humans.

Quite a bit changed in my version. Both King Shantanu and Rick made the promise to never question their companion's actions. They both remained true to their word until after the seventh offense. As I did in the first part of this story, the girl spends Ricks money as opposed to killing King Shantanu's children. Other changes include: After getting confronted, Rick decides to leave Kendall by taking back the ring as opposed to the queen saying that she must leave King Shantanu. Additionally, instead of the reason for the action being to drown the gods that were cursed to be born humans, Kendall was just using Rick for his money.

  1. Hi Nathan!
I really enjoyed your version of the story. It is really interesting how in the Mahabharata, we know the context behind why she kills their babies, so we don't (or at least I didn't) dislike her or blame her for doing so, but when you take away the background information or change the setting of the story, I felt differently about the characters. I had no sympathy for Kendall. I like that you changed the ending too. Instead of Kendall leaving Rick, he is the one who essentially ends the relationship by taking away her ring. Him ending things makes more sense with this story than Kendall leaving because she didn't get her way, in my opinion.

  2. Hi Nathan! I have not read the earlier parts of this story but I was able to hop right into the story anyways. You wrote it very well. I actually really like this retelling, it fits very well. I never would have thought of it. I do feel like in the original story it seemed more like she was freeing the elements, so she might have been doing a good thing? I do not know for sure, but your "queen" is purely being selfish, and I think that is the only thing off with your story. Overall good read though! Also, I really liked the Kanye West "Gold Digger" picture you added.

  3. Hi Nathan! This was a great idea for a retelling of this story. I remember thinking when I read the original how unlikely it was that the king would actually not question his queen drowning their children, no matter what promise he had made her. When I read yours I cringed at the idea of Kendall spending who knows how much money. The only thing I would've done differently is have made it so Kendall does this in a more spread out timeline, rather than every night for a week.
